YOU, AND I, AND CONTACT IMPROVISATION

When we are in contact with another dancer, or dancers, we encounter physical bodies that only exist at that moment in time and space. And at the same time, we encounter history, personal & global, ghosts of other beings, desires, boundaries, attraction, repulsion, power dynamics. While we are in touch with one, we are inevitably also in touch with everything. 

In this workshop, we will explore different modes of relating through movement that touch on all these things. We will utilize tools from contact improvisation, somatic work, and David’s choreographic practice of Desire. We will play with exercises making transparent the boundaries, desires, impulses, and hierarchies that arise while dancing. We will circle around the kind of “pure” encounter that is at the heart of the contact improvisation myth, that it is purely about “physics”. We will sense, explore, and certainly talk & write a bit in the workshop, but mostly, we will attempt to do all this while dancing.

We will take a playful and humorous, yet despite this no less committed, approach to relationships, short- and long- and medium-term, that we find ourselves in on the dance floor. Who are what are we encountering when we contact dance, and is it ever truly possible to encounter anyone but ourselves? This workshop may not provide the answers, but will fail beautifully in the attempt.

DAVID BLOOM

David Bloom (he/him) is a choreographer, dancer, teacher, father, filmmaker, pianist, bodyworker, fermenting Jewish mystic, and tea collector. Graduated from the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt and the M.A. Choreography course at HZT Berlin, as well as the Urban Tantra Professional Training Program with Barbara Carellas. He was a member of the dance ensemble at Staatstheater Darmstadt, and has collaborated as a dancer on projects by Tino Sehgal, Marco Santi, Nir de Volff/Total Brutal, Micha Purucker, Ingo Reulecke & Lukas Matthaei, Canan Erek, Friederike Plafki, Barbara Bess, Felix Ruckert, Akemi Nagao, Martin Nachbar, and Michael Turinsky.

His dance film trilogy S*x & Space premiered at the Berlin P*rn Film Festival and was screened internationally. His choreography has also been shown at Tanzfabrik Berlin, Dock11 Berlin, La Fête du Slip in Lausanne, and at the Stockholm Dance Film Festival. He has also made choreography for students in HfMdK Frankfurt’s B.A. in Dance. David was a 2012 danceWEB scholar and his teaching has included HZT Berlin, Tanzquartier Vienna, Tanzfabrik Berlin, Human Architecture Lab in St. Petersburg, the K3 Center for Choreography in Hamburg, the M.A. of Contemporary Dance Education in Frankfurt, STRETCH Festival Berlin, the Body IQ Festival Berlin, the Rietveld Academie for Fine Arts & Design in Amsterdam, & the ImPulsTanz Festival in Vienna. 

For the past decade or so, his work has revolved around questions of Desire, Intimacy, Boundaries, Power Relationships, Consent, and Group Dynamics. Other interests include Cross-Pollination, Pleasure, Space, Cellular Structures, the Digestive System, Fermentation, Sourdough, Beauty, Breath, Time, Spirit, and Transformation. 

David is currently a transdisciplinary artistic PhD candidate at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and Linz Arts University (Kunstuni Linz) with his proposal “Desire to Become One – S*x, Spirit, & Choreography and Active & Receptive Practices”.

Cancellations may not be pretty, but they happen because life moves. Unfortunately, we cannot bear the risk of failures alone. If you withdraw from the registration, you will receive from the seminar fee:

Up to 6 weeks before you’ll get 80% back, up to 2 weeks before you’ll get 50% back. Thereafter, the full participation fee will be due.

It is always possible to appoint a replacement person.

If the workshop has to be cancelled by the instructor or motionlab.cologne, you will be rebooked for a workshop of your choice in the three following months free of charge.

DU UND ICH UND KONTAKTIMPROVISATION

Wenn wir mit anderen tanzenden Menschen in Kontakt sind, begegnen wir physischen Körpern, die nur in diesem einzigartigen Moment in Zeit und Raum existieren. Und gleichzeitig begegnen wir der persönlichen und der globalen Geschichte, den Geistern anderer Wesen, Wünschen, Grenzen, Anziehung, Abstoßung, Machtdynamiken. Während wir mit einem Menschen in Kontakt sind, sind wir unweigerlich auch in Kontakt mit allem. 

In diesem Workshop werden wir in Bewegung verschiedene Modi der Beziehung erforschen, die an all diese Dinge anknüpfen. Wir werden mit Tools aus der Kontaktimprovisation, der somatischen Arbeit, und Davids choreografischer Praxis des Begehrens arbeiten. Wir werden mit Übungen spielen, die Grenzen, Begehren, Impulse und Hierarchien, die beim Tanzen entstehen, transparent machen. Wir werden um die Art der „reinen“ Begegnung kreisen, die dem Mythos der Kontaktimprovisation zugrunde liegt, dass es sich um reine „Physik“ handelt. Wir werden spüren, erforschen und sicherlich auch reden und schreiben, aber vor allem werden wir versuchen, all dies beim Tanzen zu tun.

Wir werden einen spielerischen und humorvollen Zugang finden, zu den kurz-, lang- und mittelfristigen Beziehungen, in denen wir uns beim Tanzen wiederfinden, der dadurch aber nicht weniger Hingabe beinhaltet, Wem oder was begegnen wir, wenn wir Contact tanzen, und ist es überhaupt möglich, jemand anderem als uns selbst zu begegnen? Dieser Workshop wird vielleicht nicht die Antworten liefern, aber bestenfalls bei dem Versuch in Schönheit scheitern.

David Bloom (er/ihn) ist Choreograph, Tänzer, Dozent, Vater, Filmemacher, Pianist, Bodyworker, fermentierender jüdischer Mystiker und Teesammler. Seine Choreographische Arbeit war auch bei der Serie “Open Spaces” der Tanzfabrik Berlin, im Dock11 Berlin, beim La Fête du Slip in Lausanne und beim Stockholm Dance Film Festival zu sehen. Er choreographierte auch für Studierende des B.A. Tanz an der HfMdK Frankfurt. David war 2012 danceWEB-Stipendiat und unterrichtete u.A. am HZT Berlin, Tanzquartier Wien, Tanzfabrik Berlin, Human Architecture Lab in St. Petersburg, K3 Zentrum für Choreographie in Hamburg, dem M.A. Contemporary Dance Education in Frankfurt, STRETCH Festival Berlin, Body IQ Festival Berlin, Rietveld Academie for Fine Arts & Design in Amsterdam, & dem ImPulsTanz Festival in Wien. 

In den letzten Jahren dreht sich seine Arbeit um Fragen des Begehrens, der Intimität, Grenzen, Machtbeziehungen, Consent, und Gruppendynamiken. Weitere Interessen sind Kreuzbestäubung, Freude, Raum, zelluläre Strukturen, der Verdauungsapparat, Fermentation, Sauerteig, Schönheit, Atem, Zeit, Spirit, Zeit und Transformation. 

David arbeitet aktuell an einer transdisziplinären künstlerischen Promotion an der Zürcher Hochschule der Künste und der Kunstuni Linz zu dem Thema “Desire to Become One – S*x, Spirit, & Choreography as Active & Receptive Practices”.

Bis 6 Wochen vorher bekommst du 80% zurück, bis 2 Wochen vorher bekommst du 50% zurück. Danach wird die volle Teilnahmegebühr fällig.
